Pointers from Ikon Pass holders when visiting Valle Nevado.
Perched up in the Andes, Valle Nevado is proudly South America’s highest ski resort, offering breathtaking views and world-class slopes. With its vibrant culture and stunning scenery, here’s how to make the most of this Chilean mountain escape, courtesy of your mountain community in the Ikon Pass Holders Facebook group.
GETTING THERE
Reaching Valle Nevado is part of the adventure. Most Ikon Pass holders recommend flying into Santiago International Airport (SCL), which is a quick 38 miles (61 km) from the resort. From there, the general consensus seems to be hiring a driver or booking a shuttle service to navigate the winding mountain road versus renting a car. Be prepared for snowy conditions, as the road is steep and requires chains during winter. Pass holders also suggest booking your transportation in advance, especially during peak season.
LODGING
Valle Nevado resort offers a range of accommodations, including three main hotels: Hotel Valle Nevado for luxury seekers, Hotel Puerta del Sol for mid-range travelers, and Hotel Tres Puntas for those wanting a more budget-friendly option. Whichever your selection, you’ll get convenient ski-in/ski-out access and amazing Andes views. Many community members recommend staying at the top of the resort to avoid making the hour-plus drive up the mountain every day. For larger groups or those seeking a more private stay, some members also recommend staying at nearby apartments or cabins.
TERRAIN
Valle Nevado boasts over 2,400 acres of skiable terrain with options for every skill level. Ikon Pass holders recommend visiting in mid-August for the best snow — remember, it’s winter for the Southern Hemisphere at that time of year. Once you’re there, community members recommend taking the Andes Express or Tres Puntas lifts for access to some of the best runs and panoramic views, including a direct view of the 17,795-foot glacier-topped Cerro Plomo Peak. One final terrain tip from pass holders: whatever you do, don’t pass up Valle Nevado’s back bowls.
APRÈS/DINING
The après scene at Valle Nevado is as delicious as it is diverse, blending Chilean flavors with international flair. Many hotel restaurants feature different cuisines with rich and distinctive varietals of Chilean wine. Ikon Pass community members recommend La Fourchette for gourmet and hearty dishes to refuel after a long day on the slopes. For Chilean-style dishes like salmon ceviche, grilled entraña, and more, be sure to visit Sur in the Hotel Tres Puntas. Experience the signature smoked meats at La Leñera or indulge in a traditional South American pisco sour at Valle Lounge, connected to the Hotel Valle Nevado, while enjoying live music and stunning mountain views.
